PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURE BY WASHINGTON LEDESMA AT GREENE AND GREENE GALLERY

As a small child in his native Uruguay, Washington Ledesma often visited his cousin’s farm. He played with the mud in the barnyard, mixing it with straw and water to make animal shapes and faces. As an artist his first clay objects were primitive human figurines inspired by neolithic cave paintings. He began to study early cultures from Mesopotamia to the Incas to find his own roots.

Ledesma trained to teach physical education before attending Montevideo’s Bauhous inspired School of Fine Arts. There he studied architecture as well as painting, jewelry making, metal sculpting and printmaking. He also was a part of the Engraver’s Club, a group of talented and socially aware group of printmakers. The political unrest in Uruguay led him to emigrate and Ledesma arrived in New York City in 1973.

His ceramics, paintings and sculpture all evidence his originality and whimsical sense of the world he inhabits. Ledesma’s exuberant use of color tells us that life continues to renew itself in these paintings. Life is here, it is spilling over and it will survive in all its glory

A number of paintings on exhibit for this show are focused on the theme of Noah’s Ark

Here, the artist interprets an ancient religious theme, bringing us a present day message of hope and survival. Ledesma says, “We are experiencing shocking events of nature, devastating hurricanes and tsunamis as well as global warming which may destroy many habitats for life on our planet. In addition, global unrest and insecurity create fear that life as we know it may not survive.”

Ledesma describes his imagery in the Noah’s Ark works saying, “... there is Noah, there is the ark, and there is all the life that is being carried by the ark as the waters rise. There is the land, the land that was left and the precious land that will be there to serve for the repopulation of the species.” In the paintings the land is green, the water clear, the air fresh, all requirements for survival and harmony between man and nature.

Through the immediacy of these wonderful paintings Ledesma leads us to share his vision of hope and renewal

The show, which includes both paintings and sculptures, opens Friday, May 5th with a wine and cheese reception from 5 pm to 8 pm with the artist Washington Ledesma. The show will close on Sunday, June 4, 2006.
